The District Head Quarters of this place is Kottayam.
It has a total land area of 2,203 Sq.Km and a population of 19,52,901. The literacy rate of Kottayam stands at 95.90 which is almost 96%, mostly people here are literate because of good exposure to education and various other facilities.

Kottayam district was formed in the year 1949. Kottayam had 3 main revenue divisions before Travancore-Kochi joined in. the 3 revenue divisions were Thiruvanathapuram, Kollam and Kottayam. The administration of these places was under the hands of Diwan Peshkar. After the formation of the state it became district and was under the administration of District Collector.

Kottayam is the Taluk head quarter of Kottayam Taluk, it includes places like Akalakunnam, Vijayapuram, Thiruvarppu, Anicadu, Perubhaikodu, Arpookara, Perubhaikodu, Athirumpuzha, Muttambalam, Ayamanam, Onamthuruth, Ayarkunnam, Manarcadu, Chengalam East, Kottayam, Chenglam, Kaipuzha, Ettumannore, Koorapuzha, Kumarakom, Meenadom, Nattakom, Pampady, Peroor, Puthupally and Veloor.

Vaikom is the taluk headquater of Vaikom taluk and it includes places like Chempu, Velloor, Vaikom, Jeezhoor, Vadakkemuri, Kaduthuruth, Neduvila, Mulakkulam, Kulaseckharamangalam, Kallara, Vechoor, Kothanallore, Manjoor, Muttachira, Thalayazham and Vadayar.

Pala is the Taluk headquarter of Meenachil taluk, which includes places like Bharanaganam, Vellilappally, Vallichira, Elakkadvu, Theekoy, Erattupetah, Ramapuram, Poovarani, Kadanadu, Poonjar Vadakkekara, Kanakkari, Monipally, Kidagoor, Poonjar Thekkekara, Kondoor, Lalam, Kuravilangadu, Meenachil, Kurichithanam, Melukavu, Moonilavu, Poonjar Nadubhagam, Puliyannore, Thalappalam, Uzhavoor and Veliyannore.

Changanassery is the Taluk headquarter of Changanassery taluk, it includes places like Changanassery, Vellavoor, Chethipuzha, Vakathanam, Kangazha, Thottakadavu, Madappally, Karukachal, Nedumkunnam, Kizhakka Vazhappally, Paippad, Kurichy, Padinjara Vazhappally, Throkodithanam and Vazhoor.

Kanjirappally is the Taluk Headquarter of Kanjirappally taluk and it includes places like Cheruvally, Vadekke Erumeli, Chirakadavu, Mundakayam, Edukunnam, Koovappally, Elamkulam, Koottickal, Elikkulam, Manimala, Kanjirappally and Thekke Erumeli.

Geographically Kottayam has no seashore. There is Edanadu situated at the banks of Venattu Lake and also has High ranges located at the border of Idukki district. Kottayam has river which is named as Meenachil. Kottayam has a total forest land area of around 8,141 hectres.

There are various Tourist places to visit at Kottayam. Some of the famous ones are listed below:
Bharanaganam
Bharanaganam is located near Pala Pilgrimage centre which is also known by the name Sr. Alphonsa. 'Cherupally' is a Small church named as St Mary's Orthodox Church. The beauty of the church lies in its elegant tactfully spoiled on entrance porches with dye paintings of around 400 year old vegetables on its walls and ceilings.

'Ettumannoore'
'Ettumannoore' is the famous Siva Temple which is located 12 km north of Kottayam. The place is wonderful symbol of amazing wood carvings and elegant murals.

Kumarakom
Kumarakom has an amazing Bird Sanctuary along the famous Vembanad Lake which is located at a distance of 16 km west of Kottayam, the place was once a rubber plantation area. You can see lots of migratory species and local fowls too.

Mannanam
Mannanam is located near Ettumannore Christian Pilgrimage Centre. It is also famous by the name Chavara Fr. Kuriakose Elias. The main Thirunakkara Siva Temple is situated in centre of the town.

'Valiapally'
Valiapally has a Big Church named as St:Mary's Orthodox Church. It was built in the year 1550. The Altar has an amazing some stone crosses flanked to its sides which has Persian beautifully carved inscriptions on it.
