It has a total area of 2,491 Km having a population of 25,84,118. Kollam has great literacy rate of 91.49%. Kollam was founded in the 9th century and thus marks the beginning of Malayalam Era. The ancient town of Kollam has history, interwoven with Dutch, Portuguese etc. Kollam was once a revenue division of Travancore in olden days. The year 1949 marks the forming of Kollam district, when the Travancore and Kochi state were formed.
The various talukas of Thiruvalla, Karthkappally, Cherthala, Ambalapuzha and Chengannore were parted on 17th August,1957 and as a result Alapuzha district was formed. Again when the Pathanamthitta district was formed in the year 1982, the Pathanamthitta Taluk and few villages of the Kunnathur taluk also parted from Kollam district.

Punalur is the taluk headquarter of Pathanapuram Taluk, it includes places like Alayamon, Vilakkudi, Anchal, Thinkalkarikkom, Arackal, Thalavoor, Arayankavu, Punalur, Ayranallore, Pidavoor, Pathanapuram, Channapeetah, Kulathupuzha, Eroor, Edamulakkal, Edamon, Karavaloor, Maloor, Pattazhi, Piravanthoor, Punnala, Thenmala, Vadakode.
Karunagappally is the taluk Headquarter of Karunagappally taluk, it includes places like Adhinadu, Vadakkumthala, Alappad, Thevalakkara, Ayanivelikulangara, Thevalakkara, Chavara, Paavumba, Clappana, Needakara, Karunagappally, Kallebhagam, Kulasckharapuram, Ochira, Pammana, Thekkumbhagam and Thodiyoor.
Kunnathur is the taluk Headquarter of Kunnathur taluk, it includes places like Kunnathur, Shuranadu south, Mynagappally, Sasthamcotta, Shuranadu north, Padinjara Kallada and Poruvazhi.
Geographically Kollam has amazing Sahya Mountains at the east frontier and Arabian sea on the west. The sea shore lines up a total coastline of 37 kms. Kollam’s 2 rivers are Kallad and Ithikkara. Kollam has a total forest land area of 81,438 hectres. You can find backwaters at the places called Azhtamudi, Edava, Paravur and Nadayara, the mineral water lake which is tourist destination is at Sathamcotta.
The famous Tourist destinations of Kollam are at Thenmala, Jadayu Rock at Chadayamangalm, Thirumullavaram Beach, Palaruvi, Model Beach Park at Kochuplammoodu, Ayyappa temples at Achenkovil, Adventure Park Asram, Aryancavu, Kulathur and Light house at Thangassery.

Chavara has an Industrial Centre of Mineral sand. Titanium Complex is situated at Sankaramangalam.
Kottarakkara
Kottarakkara is the famous birthplace of ' Rmanattam Kathakali'. Marthanda Varma captured Kootarakkara in the year 1764.
Kottukkal
Kottukkal has a Cave Temple.
Kundara
Kundara is well known famous for China clay. The most renowned and well known Kundara Ceramic Industrial Centre is located here.
Neendakara
Neendakara has most amazing famous fishing centre. The Indo Norweign Fisheries Community Project was started here in the year 1953. Neendakara has the famous Fishing harbour and a Port.
Ochira
Ochira has the well known famous Parama Brahma Temple. The famous festivals of 'Ochirakali and 12 Vilakkukalum ' are celebrated with much fun and enjoyment. People from different parts of the state come here to celebrate this festivals.
Sasthamcotta
Sasthamcotta poses the natural mineral water lake. The most prominent temple of Sasthakshertam is located here.
You can enjoy the cruising on the House boats at Ashtamudi Lake which is the most famous places amongst tourists and the one of the attractions of India.
