The District Head Quarter is Painavu. It has total land area of 5,019 Sq.Km and population of Painavu stands at 11,28,605. Idukki district was formed in the year 1972.
Peerumedu is the Taluk headquarter of Peerumedu taluk, it includes places like Elappara, Vagamon, Kokayar, Peruvanthanam, Kumali, Peerumedu, Periyar, Manchumala, Upputhara and Mlappara.
Nedumkandom is the taluk headquarter of Udumbanchola Taluk and it includes places like Anakkara, Vathikudi, Upputhode, Anavilasm, Thankamony, Ayyappan Kovil, Rajakumari, Baisanvalley, Pooppara, Chakkukulam, Pampadumpara, Kattappana, Chathurangappara, Parathode, Chinnakanal, Karunapuram, Kalkunthal, Kathippara, Konnathady, Rajakkat, Santhanpara, Udumbachola and Vandenmedu,.
Devikulam is the taluk headquarter of Devikulam taluk, it includes places like Anaviratty, Vellathuval, Kanthallore, Pallivasal, KDH, Mannamkadom, Kottakkampur, Makulam, Keezhathur, Kunchithanni Kuttampuzha, Marayoor and Vattavada.
Thodupuzha is the taluk Headquarter of Thodupuzha taluk and it includes places like Alakkode, Velliyamattom, Arakulam, Udumbannore, Elappally, Neyyasserry, Idukki, Manakkad, Kudayathur, Kanjikuzhi, Karimannore, Karikkode, Kodikulam, Karikunnam, Kumaramangalam, Muttom, Purappuzha, Thodupuzha, and Vannappuram.
Painavu is swarmed by Sahya mountains. The district is marked by its high lands and midlands. The most famous and topmost peak of Kerala is Anamudi which is located in Painavu district. Painavu has some of the best marvelous famous hills spots like Eravimala, Devikulam, Gudur, Kathumala, Karimala, Chenthvara, Devimala, Anchanadu, Kumarickal, Kabula, Karikkulam, and Perumal. One of the biggest and largest forest land area is located at Idukki district. The total of forest land area of Idukki stands at a whopping 2,60,907 hectares. The place is truly a nature’s paradise with wonderful and magnificent scenic beauty. There is some magic in this place, it will make you to want to come back again and again for sure.
Painavu has some amazing rivers like Meenachil, Periyar and Muvattupuzha which have their origins starting from Idukky district. The great Pamba flows through Maryayoor and then merges with world famous river Kaveri. Also the Peringer Kuttiyar and Muthirapuzhayar merges with Periyar making it a huge river.

Chinnar Wildlife
The Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is situated at a distance of 50 km from Munnar – Uthummal Petah route. The Chinar wild life has a total area of 94 sq km. It has India’s most famous animals like Tigers, Leopards, Buffaloes, Elephants etc.
Idukki
Idukki is located at a distance of around 130 km from Kochi. Idukki has India first ever Arch Dam at Periyar river. It was inaugurated in the year 1976, by the then late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 13th of February. Idukki has also the famous wildlife sanctuary spanning over 70 sq km of distance. You would be amazed to see varieties of elephants there.
Kumily
Kumily is the main gateway of Thekkady. Kumily stands at the junction of Kerala-Tamil Nadu border at the north of boundary. The place is an amazing location for buying spices as it has market full of spice shops, it is at a distance of 4 km from Thekkady. People wanting to see the sanctuary here can take a boat trip through lake. If you are a nature person, you can opt for taking a round of jungle walks which is full of exploring new things.
Mangalam Devi Temple
Mangalam Devi Temple is located at a distance of 13 km from Kumily town. This is one of the oldest temples it consists of ancient ruins, the view from this temple is really magnificent. The celebrated festival of this temple is on the day of 'Chaitra Pournami'.
Marayur
Marayur is the place to explore if you are looking for Sandal forests. You can see here ancient Sanyasi caves. Marayur is the place where you would find original hand woven “Pattu Sarees”. There is also the most famous Marayur Sarkara here.
Moolamattom
Moolamattom has one of the biggest underground electric generating projects across the whole of Kerala.
Munnar
Munnar is a hill station with some of the amazing views and weather. Munnar is at a distance of 130 km east from Kochi and at around 70 km from north of Kumily. It is the ideal place for vacationers looking for complete relaxation and fun. This is the place where 3 mountain streams confluence. Munnar has boating facility at its waterways. Munnar has one of the highest peak across South India standing at an amazing 2695m, the place is famous amongst the trekkers wanting to grow their skills. Munnar has some of the surprising exotic flora named as Nelelakurinji which is found in their forests and grasslands bathing the hills in their blue color, every 12 years it blooms there. The Eravikulam National park is also another famous location which attracts lots of tourists’ attraction.
Rajamala
Rajamala at Eravikulam is one of the parts of National Park, it is at a distanc of 14 km from Munnar, and here you would get to see the breed of Tahir Goats.
Thekkady
The Periyar wildlife sanctuary located at Thekkady is spread over an area of 777 sq km. The sanctuary has an in-built 26 sq km of artificial lake which is surrounded by lush green forests and grass lands. The place is home to bison, sambar, antelopes, monkeys, wild boar, spotted deer, langur, tigers, elephants. There are around 160 species of birds of see and gain knowledge about them. Thekkady is the centre for inside the park hotels and boat jetties. You can take a jetty to go to Kumily which is at a distance of 4 km from the sanctuary, it is one of the closes towns from here. The nearest airports are Madurai and kochi and if you are looking for main rail head to travel across the country, its Kottayam.
The waterfalls found here are Themarykuthu- Velloor located at Udumbachola Panchayath then another one is Thommenkuth which is situated at a distance of 20Km from Thodupuzha. Valakuthu waterfall which is at a distance of 130 Km from Kochi on Aluva- Munnar Road.
